I sometimes fall asleep with the TV on, only to awaken in the middle of the night to an infomercial for some DVDs of “Girls Gone Wild” or “Crazy Party Girls”. Apparently, some guys have made a business of going to Spring Break venues and talking drunken college girls into exposing themselves or engaging in girl on girl action. Actually, the “Crazy Party Girls” are probably strippers pretending to be college girls, but I digress.
I have a few questions. Where were these girls when I was in college? Supposedly, we were less repressed then having no fear of AIDS and having the benefit of the hard work of the Sexual Revolutionaries of a decade earlier. But I sure as heck never had as much fun as the folks in the “Girls Gone Wild” videos even on Spring Break.
Do any of these girls’ parents ever come across their daughters’ exposing themselves on TV? Awkward!!
Will future Senate races turn on a candidate’s having been a Girl Gone Wild? If so, will it help or hurt the candidate?
Do the guys behind “Girls Gone Wild” make money? Do they care?

They probably are porn stars pretending to be college girls. As for parents, a lot of sex workers were thrown out by our parents or glad to get the Abyss away from them. As far as I am concerned, who cares what they think.
Of course, I think our society is stupefyingly irrational to make of nudity such a shocking thing. I believe rational parents would just say: you have a beautiful body, it's yours- so wear it proudly. I just wish more of our culture's pornography presented human sexuality with dignity and passion, not sniggers. 'Exposing oneself' is a crude, materialist-reductionist phrase whose enervation serves the same purpose as moralism and shame.
I want to again see a culture where a mother could smile to see her daughter walk unconcealed, flaunting the natural power of her beauty.
Lady Aster,
There's nothing dignified about the puerile "Girls Gone Wild" videos, and I think that their attraction depends in large measure on the shock value associated with nudity. I am not sure the women are compensated in these videos, especially the ones who might really be Spring Breakers.
A couple of months ago, I spent a week at a resort with a nude section and came to enjoy nudity. There was nothing "naughty" about it, and it seemed perfectly natural after I got over the initial shyness. However, if a bunch of people stood around gawking and hooting and sniggering, this would have been troubling.
It would be great if we had a more relaxed attitude about our bodies and nudity, but we don't, and it is necessary to take into account society's hang ups. If I display my naked body on the street, I am apt to be arrested and to be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of my life. If I encourage my children to go around the house naked after a certain age, I am apt to be arrested and to have them put in a foster home.
I vow not to use the phrase "exposing oneself" in the future.
