These are the varieties of birds that have graced the yard so far this year.

What a great (and colorful) selection! I'm a bit surprised to see what appears to be a Mourning Dove - didn't realise they ranged so far from the SW US. It looks like you have your namesake - or nom de plume - in among the selection - unless my french is rustier that I imagine!
A variety of bird life such as this really adds a lot to a piece of land. When I first started visiting my property and establishing where buildings and roadways were to be fixed - I immediately noticed an absence of bird life. Four years later that is hardly the case - while working outside I have constant company now and their calls can be heard at all hours of the day.
Btw - I commented earlier when you posted about your hummingbird visitors - over the last week I've found my feeders drained every morning by nocturnal visitors - bats most likely!
You have identified correctly the brown headed cowbird, a faithful visitor.
The mourning dove is also a regular, and I try to put some feed on the ground for them.
We put up a second feeder out of sight of the one the hummers were fighting over, and it is getting some use, but neither feeder is drained. Are you using blood? :)
